Why can't I enter the last digit of the barcode for UPC, ISBN, and GTIN-14 barcodes?
The last digit of many GS1 barcodes is a 'Check Digit' character. A check digit value is calculated using the preceding numbers in the barcode, and becomes the 'last digit.' Our website automatically calculates the correct check digit to ensure all barcodes we produce are scannable.
What should I do if the 'Check Digit' (last digit) of the barcode is auto-populating the wrong number?
The Check Digit is calculated based on the preceding numbers:
- Review barcode number to verify it has been entered correctly. To avoid incorrect data inadvertently being entered, 'key enter' data rather than 'cutting/pasting' from another cell.
- Calculate the check digit by using our online check digit calculator.
- Our site has been designed to confirm our clients are ordering barcodes which have been assigned in accordance with the GS1 General Specifications. If you need further assistance with GS1 barcode standards, please Contact Us.

For sequentially numbered barcode labels, why do I get an 'error' that my barcode is too long?
Error message means data will not fit on label size selected, if produced using GS1 General Standards for that barcode symbology.
To resolve:
- Change Barcode Type to a 2D symbol. 2D barcodes (QR Codes, Data Matrix) are capable of encoding many more characters than Code 128 or Code 39.
- Select a larger label size.
- Contact Us to discuss your needs. Under special circumstances, we can produce non-GS1 Standard symbols to fit size constraints.
- Our team includes GS1 certified consultants and standards professionals who are available to assist.
